Washington “is actively considering” the possibility of appointing officials responsible for cooperation in the Norman format
The US foreign policy agency is considering all possible options that will allow Washington to be involved in the negotiations in the Norman format – without joining the four countries. About this at a briefing before the visit of the head of the department Rex Tillerson in Ukraine told the staff of the State Department.
“Regarding the Ukrainian issue, I will say that all members of the Norman format – France, Germany, Ukraine and Russia – expressed the desire to cooperate in negotiations with the US, not as a member of the format, but as an important support for it and as a co-negotiator on the implementation of the Minsk agreements” , – said an unnamed official of the State Department.
According to him, Washington is “actively considering” the possibility of appointing officials responsible for cooperation in the Norman format. “We are looking for ways how to more widely help and support the Norman format and Minsk agreements,” the agency official added vaguely.
Another US State Department official said that on the eve of his visit to Kiev, Tillerson “forms his own views and collects data,” as the best way the US can support the Minsk accords.
“But it is too early to speculate on what specific ideas and proposals he can bring with him,” the State Department concluded.
On July 9, in Kiev, President Petro Poroshenko will meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. They will discuss strengthening the country’s strategic partnership and coordinating efforts to counteract Russian aggression.
It is reported that the head of the Pentagon, James Mattis, will also visit Ukraine in the near future.
